Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

    Congratulations to Heather Nancarrow, the Director of the Queensland Centre for Domestic and Family Violence Research based at CQU Mackay, who has been appointed as deputy-chair of the National Council to Reduce Violence Against Women and Children.

    Minister for the Status of Women Tanya Plibersek this week announced the members of its National Council, to be chaired by one of the founders of the Australian White Ribbon Day campaign and international human rights advocate, Libby Lloyd AM.

    Dr Mitch Duncan will this week tell a Rockhampton audience that street patterns, variation in land uses and the number of people residing in an area are key features that impact on the behaviour of residents.

  • Indigenous Australians who want to die in homelands face obstacles

    Equipment shortages, unreliable power supplies, poor discharge planning for patients treated in metropolitan hospitals, problems with transport, and lack of telephone access, are just some of the problems faced by health professionals providing end-of-life care in remote Aboriginal communities.

    These findings are from NHMRC-funded research into palliative care service delivery in the Northern Territory, conducted by the International Program of Psycho-Social Health Research (IPP-SHR) at Central Queensland University (CQU).

  • Visiting Chinese students start immersion in community

    A group of 15 students from the City University of Hong Kong this week started to immerse themselves in the Rockhampton community.

    They will be in the city for a month (from May 26), in between taking English language classes at CQU Rockhampton.

    A total of 31 students from 11 different countries will attend a ‘Going Home' ceremony at CQU Rockhampton on Wednesday evening (May 28).

    The ceremony is for students who have completed their studies but are unable to stay in Australia for their graduation ceremony.

  • Research into future housing options

    The Institute for Sustainable Regional Development will commence surveying the residents of Moura, Theodore and Biloela as part of a research project titled ‘Ensuring Sustainable Benefits from Boom Periods: A Case Study for a Long-Term Housing Policy in the Bowen Basin'.

    The research aims to identify how new projects in the Bowen Basin region will impact on housing and labour markets, and to identify preferred options for housing market development.
