Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

  • College student engineers get CQU award

    A special presentation was made on Friday 13 August in Rockhampton at the Cathedral College by Central Queensland University to a team of four students who won the CQ Multicultural Fair & CQU Open Day Year10 Engineering Competition.

    Professor Elizabeth Taylor, AO, Dean of the James Goldston Faculty of Engineering & Physical Systems, Central Queensland University, presented certificates and gift vouchers to the winning team members Patrick Stockall, Melissa Jensen, Tamara Larkin, Trent Mayall.

    Central Queensland University (CQU) will host up to 25 members of the Australian Melon Association at a growers workshop at CQU Rockhampton on Monday 16 August.

    The purpose of the meeting is to enable Central Queensland growers in the local $4million-melon-market to review the latest research on rockmelon production and become familiar with industry marketing programs, funding and strategic plans.

  • Gemfields are tourist gold mine, says CQU study

    Preliminary research conducted by Central Queensland University shows tourism and associated industries in the Gemfields are stable in terms of continuing business and provide an important basis for sustainability of the Emerald, Sapphire, Rubyvale, Anakie and Willows communities.

    "The people of the Gemfields have developed intuitive and innovative approaches to dealing with socio-economic pressures by recognising and capitalising on their communities' unique characteristics, culture and history," explained CQU's Dr Daniel Teghe.

    CQU International's Boris Sinkovec, a part-time Information Technology Officer at CQU Gold Coast and Bachelor of Information Technology graduate, wanted to leave the "cold winters of central Europe" behind.

    His desire to live in a warmer climate by the ocean was so strong that he chose to continue his education overseas.

  • Multicultural Fair draws community together

    More than 40 performances, hundreds of ethnic food dishes and cultural displays, dozens of crafts vendors and fantastic weather drew thousands of people (pictured) to CQU Rockhampton for the 13th annual Central Queensland Multicultural Fair and CQU Open Day on Sunday 8 August.

    Highlights included a citizenship ceremony for eighteen new Australians and performances from former deep-water pearl diver Seaman Dan and ABC's Bananas in Pyjamas.

  • CQU Rockhampton Open Day caters to prospective students

    Some 40 activities, tours, seminars and information sessions occurred during CQU Rockhampton's Open Day, held in conjunction with the Central Queensland Multicultural Fair.

    Thousands of dollars in prizes and activities enticed hundreds of prospective students to visit Faculty displays established throughout the campus.

  • Kevin gains work experience at CQU

    Tannum Sands State High School student, Kevin Hodgkinson completed a week of work experience at Central Queensland University’s Gladstone campus last week.

    Kevin, who is in year 11, was participating in his school’s vocationally-oriented subject which allows the students to complete a week of work placement.

  • Distance students offered a study smorgasbord

    A “Study Smorgasbord” was held at the Gladstone campus this week for Central Queensland University’s distance students. CQU lecturer, Muriel Strahm said that there are approximately 200 students who live in Gladstone but who study from home because of work or family commitments.
