Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

  • Rocky kids get active during Christmas break

    About 65 children from the region have been participating in the annual Active Kids Sporting and Recreation Camp at CQU Rockhampton this week.

    Active Kids Rockhampton has been developed by CQU’s School of Health & Human Performance to give boys and girls aged 9 – 13 plenty to do after the Christmas excitement has died down.

    Term 1 starts on Wednesday January 31 at the CQU Language Centre (opposite the bus stop area) at 6.

    CQU’s Competence Assessment Service has teamed up with the Uniting Church’s Blue Care organisation to attract former Bundaberg nurses back to the profession.

    As part of the program the 6-week clinical placement component of the course is conducted at a Blue Care facility within the Wide Bay district.

  • Taylor becomes first woman president of engineering body

    CQU's Executive Dean of the Faculty of Sciences, Engineering and Health Professor Elizabeth Taylor has become the first woman president of the Australian Council of Engineering Deans (ACED).

    Professor Taylor was elected to the position earlier this month by the council\'s members and replaces Professor Archie Johnston, Dean of Engineering at the University of Technology Sydney.

  • IPP-SHR research supports call for parliamentary inquiry into Patient Transport Assistance Scheme

    Research conducted by CQU's International Program for Psycho-Social Health Research (IPP-SHR) has found that administrative issues are blocking the Patient Transport Assistance Scheme (PTAS) from providing equitable access to cancer treatments for rural, remote and regional Queenslanders.

    These findings match recent concerns expressed by West Australian Senator, Judith Adams, who has called for a national review of state-administered patient travel schemes.

  • Students cruise around Sydney before year ends

    Seventy-five students and 6 staff members at Sydney International Graduate Campus were treated to a sight-seeing cruise on the picturesque Sydney Harbour in Week 4 of Term 3, 2006.

    Students and staff enjoyed an hour aboard the Magistic Cruise with informative commentary about the harbour and a complementary morning tea.

  • Research compares market-based options to achieve better quality water flows into Great Barrier Reef

    Researchers will compare the relative cost-effectiveness of 'conservation auctions' involving farmers and graziers, in order to find the best ways to improve the quality of water flowing into the Great Barrier Reef.

    The research will trial conservation auctions involving landholders voluntarily bidding for financial incentives to improve their environmental practices, as opposed to older systems involving regulation and fines.
