Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

  • Digital movie making students showcase work at film screening

    For the past 12 weeks, students from CQU's Faculty of Informatics and Communication Multimedia course have been working on producing a 5-minute digital movie as part of their course.

    11 movies from 14 students will be submitted for assessment on Friday October 14 - subjects range from a documentary on computer gamers to a reworking of a classic fairytale.

    Family service providers have called for a specific service to prevent pets being used as bargaining chips to prolong abusive relationships.

    CQU researchers Dr Nik Taylor and Dr Tania Signal said a recent study assessed family service provider perspectives on the link between domestic violence, child abuse and harm to companion animals.

  • CQU-based 10,000 Steps has fruitful magazine support

    The CQU-based 10,000 Steps campaign is being promoted via Healthy Food Guide, Australia’s new monthly food magazine.

    The first 500 subscribers to the magazine will each receive an official 10,000 Steps Pedometer and logbook valued at $40.

  • Health postgrad students present at conference

    CQU’s postgraduate students Tabassum (Neeta) Ferdous and Ainsley Harch recently presented their research projects at the 36th Public Health Association of Australia Conference in Perth.

    The pair produced poster presentations for the conference which were themed about the ‘Successes in Public Health’.

    The students celebrated the completion of their degrees with a sausage sizzle, speeches and presentations.

  • Conservatorium awarded grant for visiting scholar

    The Bachelor of Jazz Studies program at the Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music (CQCM) has just been awarded a visiting scholar grant to bring Professor Michael Tracy from the University Of Louisville, Kentucky, USA, to Mackay, to consult with staff about the jazz program and research projects.

    While he is in Mackay, Professor Tracy will also consult generally with CQCM staff and provide input into research and teaching at the Conservatorium.

  • Multimedia lecturer animated about success in China and USA

    CQU multimedia lecturer Qing Huang has won the Best Animation award from China Central TV station and has been invited to attend the awards ceremony on October 22- 23 in Beijing.

    This award follows his recent visit to the United States where he exhibited his short multimedia piece entitled \'The Way\' at the 28th Asian American International Film Festival 2005.

  • Neuenfeldt co-edits Indigenous performance book

    CQU Bundaberg academic Dr Karl Neuenfeldt has co-edited a new book called 'Landscapes of Indigenous Performance: Music, song and dance of the Torres Strait and Arnhem Land', published by Aboriginal Studies Press.

    The new book brings together a wide range of contemporary explorations of Indigenous music and dance and in the Torres Strait and the tropical regions of the Northern Territory.

  • Final-year BLM students celebrate their successes

    It was a day of mixed emotions for staff and students from the Faculty of Education and Creative Arts as the third group of students to graduate from the innovative Bachelor of Learning Management (BLM) degree at Central Queensland University Mackay celebrated their achievements.

    The afternoon commenced with a barbecue in the Refectory courtyard, which was followed by 'The Jubilate', a special ceremony and cake cutting to mark the end of their studies.
