Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

  • Defence recruits from ranks of CQU students

    The Australian Defence Force recruits up to 800 graduates and undergraduates per year in the Navy, Army and Air Force across all disciplines and degrees.

    Officers from the Australian Defence Force will be conducting an employer presentation for students interested in any graduate or undergraduate positions in Defence: Bundaberg 15th: 1 – 2pm, 1/ G.

  • New equity and diversity staff welcomed

    New members of staff were recently welcomed to the Equity and Diversity Office, including Andrew Eltringham (Equity and Diversity Officer, Staff Services), Cheryl Bookallil (Equity and Diversity Officer, Student Services), Lindy Bennett (Equity and Diversity Contact Officer, Mackay) and Samantha Frost (Equity and Diversity Contact Officer, Gladstone).

    The new staff members joined their colleagues for a two-day planning workshop and met a wider range of CQU staff during a finger-food function in the CQU Rockhampton courtyard area.

  • Rton teachers gain access to science education leader

    Rockhampton's science teachers have access to one of Australia's leading science educators, thanks to a visit by Professor David Treagust.

    Professor Treagust, who will be a visiting scholar at Central Queensland University from September 11-20, is a past president of the American-based National Association for Research in Science Teaching.

    The event was staged at Rockhampton, Mackay, Gladstone and Bundaberg with some activities taking place via video conference.

    CQU's Population Research Laboratory will telephone survey a random sample of residents during the last week of September.

  • New graduate teachers ready to embrace learning-earning environment

    A new breed of teachers is being produced to handle the flexible education environment proposed to start in 2006.

    From that year onwards, students aged between 15-17 will be able to gain their education in a variety of settings, including schools, TAFE colleges, universities and workplaces.

    CQU Rockhampton student Kendall Lane is heading to Darwin this week for the national finals of the ‘QC Girl International Model Search’.

    Kendall, a second-year Bachelor of Performing Arts student, won entry to the national finals after a nightclub competition in Rockhampton earlier this year.

  • Teaching intern gets her day in the 'sunshine'

    Final-year teacher education student Anita Fitzgerald (pictured right) is getting her day in the sun via an internship at Sunshine Beach State School.

    She is among 36 students - the first teacher education cohort from Central Queensland University\'s Noosa Hub (Pomona) - to begin their internship in schools last month (August).

  • Remote student embraces technology she is reliant on

    CQU Master of Learning Management student Fiona Brady has embraced the information technology she has become reliant on for work and study in remote parts of Far North Queensland.

    She has recently been recognised by the Women in Information Technology (WIT) organisation via a postgraduate scholarship award.
