Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

    CQU Rockhampton has hosted a  free seminar by distinguished visitors Linda Marie Bye (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) and Bjørn Egil Flø (Norwegian Centre for Rural Research),  on Thursday May  17.  

    The presentation on Moose hunting - a story about men, institutions and commercialisation  -   was held on Rockhampton campus with  video  links to other CQU campuses   in Gladstone, Bundaberg and Mackay.

    Power Engineering Alliance (PEA) bursary holder Nathaniel Dunnett has learnt a lot about the workforce in recent years, including that "you can only plan for 60 per cent of your time".

    "You can't bank on having 24 hours in the day any more; I'm getting a bit too old for that," the electrical engineering (Co-op) student told a PEA networking function at Central Queensland University's Rockhampton Campus recently.

    Having lectured during the 1980s at CQU, Dr Dennis Jarvis has returned to familiar territory to take up his post as the Associate Professor in Computing for the Faculty of Business and Informatics, and is looking forward to the opportunity this position allows for pursuing his research interests. 

    Before joining CQU, Dr Jarvis worked for CSIRO Manufacturing and Materials Technology for 15 years and then for a software company, Agent Oriented Software (AOS) for 6 years.

  • Promising cyclist backs talent-spotting initiative

    Promising cyclist Pip Hindmarsh has thrown her support behind a talent-spotting initiative to be hosted at CQU Rockhampton next weekend (May 26).

    Ms Hindmarsh took a break from training for the world junior championships in Mexico in August, to take part in a media preview for the event.

    CQU Emerald's second-year Bachelor of Learning Management student Sarah Dennis has continued a purple patch of recognition by receiving the QCWA Central Highlands Division Annual Bursary.

    A morning tea was held recently at CQU Emerald so QCWA representatives could hand over $500 toward's Sarah's university studies.

    CQU Nursing academic John Kemsley has been praised for his leadership initiatives in partnership with Gympie Hospital.

    Participants in a leadership training day for clinical nurses and nurse managers have volunteered positive feedback on the event, run to develop skills in Nursing Leadership, Team Building and Strategic Planning.
