Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

    A procession of 56 graduates signalled the start of the CQU Gladstone graduation ceremony on Saturday, July 9.

    The graduates were joined by the University’s academic staff, school children from the district and a bagpiper for the procession along the City's main street.

    CQU Rockhampton is at the hub of a public opinion phone survey, contributing to a major snapshot of Queensland.

    The 2005 Queensland Social Survey will be conducted from July 15 to August 12 by the Population Research Laboratory at CQU Rockhampton.

    Recent CQU Mackay graduate Bobbi-Lea Dionysius has added a ‘faculty student of the year’ award to her diverse CV – along with achievements in singing, song-writing, stage combat and many other aspects of performing arts.

    Since gaining her Bachelor of Music Theatre (Distinction) from the Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Bobbi-Lea has found a niche as a singing teacher at her CyberFaerie Vocal Studios in St Kilda.

  • Biodiversity study to support changed grazing practices

    CQU researchers will study the biodiversity benefits of changed grazing land management practices that protect creeks and wetlands.

    Fitzroy Basin Association (FBA) chair Barbara Wildin said FBA was supporting the three-year project through to June 2007 using Natural Heritage Trust funding.

  • CQU has first degree leading to procurement award

    CQU will be the first tertiary institution whose degree-level procurement qualification has been accredited as leading to the award of MCIPS (Member of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply).

    According to a release from CIPS Australia, the MCIPS is the only internationally recognised standard for procurement professionals.

  • CQU Community Program visits wallaby refuge

    On a recent trip to Kial, a private refuge near Marlborough, a group of about 35 CQU Community Program participants were amazed to discover that there is presently no available information about the immune system or the immune responses of the bridled nailtail wallaby (or those of many other endangered macropod marsupials).

    Central Queensland University’s Dr Lauren Young, who is a marsupial Immunologist, and Janelle Lowry, Senior Conservation Officer from Queensland Parks and Wildlife, were key speakers during a visit to ‘Kial’, owned by Tina Janssen and Peter Brooks, who head up Australian Animals Care and Education Inc (AACE).

    Central Queensland University was the only university in the world and the only Asia-Pacific organisation handpicked for a Hewlett Packard (HP) new storage technology test.

    One of only nine organizations world-wide, CQU was chosen to take part in the HP Beta Test program due to the University’s willingness to the “push the boundaries” of IT technology.
