Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

  • Adults get back to learning

    CQU Rockhampton will be promoting their tertiary preparatory programs and alternative entry methods at an information centre in the CBD during Adult Learners Week next week.

    CQU offers a number of alternative entry options for non-school leavers and interested people will be able to get further information about these at the former Fitzroy Basin Building in East Street, next to the Heritage Post Office from Monday to Friday from 10am to 3pm.

    Ms Litster recently returned from conducting site inspections of tourism properties in South-East Queensland as part of her role as a judge for the Queensland Tourism Awards for 2003.

  • Many facets to Emerald science week

    CQU Emerald worked alongside the Central Highlands Science Centre and other community, industry, education and government partners to present a whole week of activities during National Science Week including a schools open day at Emerald State School on Wednesday, August 20, and a science quiz night at the Town Hall on Thursday, August 21.

    The Department of Primary Industries provided climate, entomology and veterinary information, while the Department of Natural Resources and Mines assisted with Waterwatch.

  • Wet and wild down in Woongarra

    Researchers from CQU’s Centre for Environmental Management (CEM) have been busy in Bundaberg's Woongarra Marine Park.

    The researchers, which include staff from the CEM, volunteers from the Woongarra Marine Park Monitoring & Education Project as well as staff from Queensland Parks & Wildlife Service, have been able to record the coastal habitat using a series of transects from Burnett Heads to Elliott Heads.

    Talented local writers Paul Saxby of Bundaberg and David Hilcher of North Rockhampton won first and second regional prizes with their stories ‘Oysters’ and ‘Disappearing Lake’ in this year’s Bauhinia Literary Awards, announced at the CQ Multicultural Fair at Central Queensland University Rockhampton on Sunday August 17.

    Marie Martin of Emerald was commended for her piece ‘Tampering with Pantheist’.

    A world-first study involving 16 Rockhampton students is trying to identify whether hormone fluctuations in young women place them at greater risk of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture, one of Australia’s most costly and common sports injuries.

    Visiting German medical student Elisabeth Eiling, of Kiel University, is undertaking the study under the supervision of CQU School of Health and Human Performance biomechanics lecturer Adam Bryant and Rockhampton orthopaedic surgeon Associate Professor Dr.

  • Remote island stint for Rockhampton graduate

    Central Queensland University biology honours graduate Madoc Schlencker’s study path has led him to a remote indigenous island off the coast of Darwin.

    Rockhampton-raised Madoc is now a third year University of Queensland Brisbane medical student who, as part of his clinical rural rotation to Rockhampton, has been given the opportunity to work on Bathurst Island, off the Top End of Australia, for six weeks.
