Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

    The paper examines how an Australian desert upbringing, family nurturing and access to recordings of American artists has produced a "hybrid travelling voice".

    CQU Rockhampton staff and students put on their jeans and reached deep into their pockets for Jeans for Genes Day on Friday 2 August.

    Community Relations Officer Priscilla Crighton said almost $600 was raised from the sale of badges on campus.

  • Popular literary awards announced at Multicultural Fair

    New South Wales writer Steve Moline took first prize for his Open Story in Idiom 23's Bauhinia Literary Awards, announced on Sunday at the Central Queensland Multicultural Fair on Sunday.

    Steve, from Wentworth Falls, was commended strongly by the judge for his entry “Her Painting, His Photograph”, while Greg Bogaerts from Kotara Fair, NSW, received second prize with his short story “The Swimmer”.

  • Book of CQ memories launched

    Authors of 32 short stories about growing up in Central Queensland were commended at the launch of the Down Memory Lane booklet on Friday, 9 August.

    Central Queensland University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Glenice Hancock and CQU Press manager David Myers launched the book at a special morning tea in the CQU Library’s Reading Room.

    Yeppoon’s St Ursula’s School debated their way to victory at the High School’s Debate Clash at Central Queensland University on Wednesday (14 August).

    Seven teams from local high schools participated in the inaugural debating competition sponsored by The James Goldston Faculty of Engineering and Physical Systems at CQU, the Centre for Railway Engineering and The Institution of Engineers Australia.

This series, conducted by Phillipa Sturgess, is designed for lecturers who want to get started in creating their own online course using WebCT, or want to add to an existing WebCT course.

  • Former meatworkers get free training from CQU

    Workers affected by the recent closure of Rockhampton's Lakes Creek meatworks will be able to receive free neighbourhood computer training from Central Queensland University's COIN Internet Academy, a project of the University's Faculty of Informatics and Communication and the Rockhampton City Council.

    Former employees like Les Cooke (pictured far left) and Brett Svendsen (middle left), through the Meatworkers Support Group, will attend the Academy on East Street to participate in six two-hour sessions, which will give them skills to search for and apply for work online.
