With growing food safety fears, and concerns about animal welfare and production, there is increasing worldwide demand for ‘clean and green’ food products. And Australia, with its already established ‘clean and green’ image, is grabbing hold of the market.

A Central Queensland University PhD researcher is looking at new ways to test fruit quality using Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS).

NIRS is commonly used in fruit packing houses to determine sweetness in fruit, but CQU’s Phul Subedi is researching the use of this non-invasive technique to determine fruit eating qualities other than sweetness, such as dryness defect, acidity, firmness and starch content.

A former school groundsman will celebrate his career move into school teaching when he graduates with a Bachelor of Learning Management degree from Central Queensland University Noosa this week.

Peter McGeechan has had some interesting jobs over the years including landscaping and diesel fitting, although more recently he has worked as a groundsman at Tewantin State School, Noosa.

CQU Rockhampton first-year nursing students have made a special book presentation to their lecturer, Kerry Reid-Searl.

The book, signed by all first years, was presented to Ms Searl immediately after the students sat their exam.

Central Queensland University has awarded environmental science student Joanne Jennings with this year’s Women in Science and Technology (WIST) scholarship.

The $1000 scholarship is designed to help relieve the financial burden on low socio-economic students who have completed at least two subjects through CQU’s WIST program and have been accepted into a non-traditional degree in science, engineering or technology at CQU.

Three of CQU’s Singaporean students and a staff member from the University’s Singapore partner (Hartford Institute) visited Rockhampton Campus this week.

The students are among 137 Singaporeans enrolled in CQU’s Bachelor of Science (Psychology) degree, which has been offered in that country for four years.
