Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

    High school students will experience local University for a day when CQU Bundaberg opens its doors to more than 150 high school students this Friday (March 26 from 10am to 2pm).

    Students are expected from Bundaberg State High, Isis State High, Kepnock High School Rosedale High School, St Luke\'s High and Shalom College.

    The James Goldston Faculty of Engineering & Physical Systems recently conducted the first session in a continuing professional development course specifically developed for science teachers.

    Eighteen existing science teachers from nine secondary schools within the Rockhampton/Yeppoon area are going back to University this term to take part in the accelerated learning course which will be run for three hours per week over 16 weeks.

    Gladstone's Mary Kelly (pictured left) used the springboard of CQU's WIST (Women Into Science and Techology) program to help achieve her goal of becoming a registered nurse and she is now eyeing a midwifery career.

    Ms Kelly was a mature-age entrant to tertiary study but found that academic staff gave her ample support to complete her Bachelor of Health (Nursing) degree and secure a hospital job.

    Judge Charles Brabazon QC, author Frank Brabazon Rudd and CQU Press Director Professor David Myers recently attended the Brisbane launch of Frank's memoir of his life in the Central Queensland bush and in Rockhampton.

    The memoir is entitled Half a Lifetime in the Australian Bush.

    Tourist activities on the Causeway Lake have been curtailed as certain areas of the lake become too shallow.

    The biological life is also changing as some fish can not survive in shallow water.

    The Queensland Auditor General, Mr Len Scanlan and Assistant Auditor General, Mr Neil Jackson visited the University this week and attended a special meeting of the Audit Committee. The Auditor General signed off on CQU's audited financial statements for 2003 without qualification.

  • Study shows many people social but others fail to bond

    A baseline study funded by CQU's Centre for Social Science Research shows that Central Queenslanders are a fairly social lot, but that a significant group are missing out on social opportunities.

    Researcher Dr Harvey Griggs studied findings from the 2003 CQ Social Survey conducted in the area from Mackay to Bundaberg and west to the border.

    Foundation Dean of Informatics and Communication Professor Stewart Marshall was farewelled during a function in the Chancellery gardens recently.

    Professor Marshall was integral to the success of the diverse Faculty grouping and presided over rapid growth in international student enrolments.
