Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

  • Numeracy materials donated for Noosa students

    Numeracy teaching and learning materials, kits, teacher reference materials and other numeracy learning support publications from the Australian Awards for Excellence in Educational Publishing (in 2007, 2008 and 2009) are being donated to Bachelor of Learning Management students undertaking the Numeracy in Action course.

    CQUniversity Noosa lecturer Dr Mike Horsley is also Chief Judge of the Australian Awards in Excellence in Educational Publishing, which he manages in partnership with the Australian Publishers Association.

    Cancer Council Queensland is proud to have reached a 100-team milestone for its Relay for Life fundraiser planned for CQUniversity Rockhampton's sports fields on the weekend of May 22-23.

    Last year's campus event raised over $257,000 and organisers are hoping for more success this year.

  • Gladstone's Helen Holden to receive Teacher of Year Award

    Gladstone preparatory program innovator Helen Holden will receive her 2009 Vice-Chancellor's Teacher of the Year Award during a graduation ceremony at the Entertainment Centre, from 5pm on Thursday May 20.

    A total of 51 graduates will attend the ceremony, which includes recognition for prize and award winners.

    An expanded CQUniversity Experience Outreach Program will be launched in the presence of a senior government official, from 11am-Noon on Tuesday May 25.

    Academic Registrar Barbara Lawrence has encouraged all staff to get involved in the launch, which will be videoconferenced from Rockhampton to campuses in Bundaberg, Mackay, Gladstone and Emerald.

  • Mangrove swamp specialist now proud author of two worldwide textbooks

    When Rockhampton-based mangrove swamp specialist Dr Steve McKillup made a few off-the-cuff comments at a book display around five years ago, little did he realise they would lead to publication of two textbooks aimed at students and researchers throughout the world.

    Serendipity kicked in when Steve and his wife Ruth, also a scientist, decided to skip a long session on fly identification during a fly specialists' conference in Brisbane.

    CQUniversity's Learning and Teaching Education Research Centre (LTERC) recently hosted a group of South American academics as part of the Southern Skies Distance Education Academic Exchange project.

    This exchange project is focusing on building relationships in Australia around the theme of distance education and will deliver an important transfer of skills and sharing of experience, showcasing both Australian and Latin American distance education expertise.

  • Teens back on campus for annual biz wiz quiz

    Rockhampton region high school students will be back on campus again next week for the annual Business Challenge (Tuesday, May 25, 6pm-9pm).

    Organised by the Faculty of Arts, Business Informatics & Education, the Challenge is a competition for business-orientated year 12 students with skills in a range of areas including; accounting, business information technology; legal studies, general business studies and general knowledge.

  • Bundy Campus flies flag at major jobs expo

    CQUniversity Bundaberg staff members ensured the concept of 'tertiary education as a career booster' was represented during a major Centrelink Jobs Expo, held at the city's Civic Centre this week.

    About 4250 people came through the doors to talk to 65 stand-holders and Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard attended to launch the event.
