Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

    A research paper by CQU's Professor Paul Hyland has been selected as a Highly Commended Winner for the Emerald Literati Network Awards for Excellence 2007, arranged by United Kingdom-based Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

    Professor Hyland's commended paper was 'Statistical techniques to facilitate the launch price of fresh fruit: bringing science to the art of pricing', published in British Food Journal.

    Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music graduate Cilla Slack and second-year student Kathleen Campbell are filling 2 of the 3 soprano spots for an Opera North tribute to Dame Nellie Melba in Mackay on May 19.

    The concert - from 5pm at Dame Melba House in Marian near Mackay - presents a rediscovery of the wonderful songs such by Melba during her career, along with snippets from the Melba life and background to the songs.

  • CQU's Gasser among Sheffield's merry men

    CQU staff member Mark Gasser, a concert pianist and lecturer at Mackay's Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music, is included in a list of over 200 'famous or infamous' Sheffielders, including Robin Hood (said to be from Loxley in Sheffield).

    Mark's listing in the the document compiled by Sheffield City Council explains he is a pianist who played with Sheffield Youth Orchestra.

    A hydrology and water engineer, based at Central Queensland University, has developed a strategy to help combat water runoff and erosion damage.

    Dr Yeboah Gyasi-Agyei said the design of strategies to control runoff and erosion often required information on individual rain storms at a fine timescale.

  • Male student teachers could benefit from links with teaching veterans

    Peer mentoring would help attract and retain male primary school teachers in Australia according to a Central Queensland University researcher.

    CQU Researcher Dr Teresa Moore argues that networks between male pre-service student teachers and experienced male teachers could help establish a teacher identity that would encourage quality male primary school teachers to stay in the classroom.

    Faculty of Business and Informatics Senior Lecturer Dr Ananda Jeeva has assured the future of the Bachelor of Business Specialisation in Procurement and Supply by maintaining professional accreditation through the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply.

    Dr Jeeva, a discipline leader and member of the CIPS steering committee, has worked tirelessly over the past 2 years to further develop the Procurement specialisation as part of the Business program for Central Queensland University.
