Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

  • CQCM helped SCOPE Carla's career

    Network Ten’s new children’s science show ‘SCOPE’, which premiered on Monday, is yet another achievement in the successful career of the show's Producer and CQCM graduate Ms Carla de Jong.

    Carla completed her Bachelor of Music Theatre in 1998 from the Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music, and said her time at the CQCM has helped her to achieve what she has so far achieved in her career.

    Ms Lucy Holmes, star of the internationally acclaimed Kylie Minogue tribute show ‘100% Kylie’, will soon be back in Mackay to perform at her old training ground - the Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music.

    Lucy, who studied music and music theatre at the CQCM, has been performing with ‘100% Kylie’ for the past 3 years in a Kylie Minogue tribute show that is in huge demand across the country and internationally – largely due to Lucy’s uncanny resemblance to the real Kylie.

    For one night the Mackay Entertainment Centre played host to the classics as the Mackay Choral Society and their 50 person choir celebrated their 60th Anniversary with a very special concert.

    Over 500 people arrived at the Mackay Entertainment Centre to experience the Mackay version of London’s famous ‘Last Night of the Proms’, and tickets were selling like hot cakes at the door.

  • CQU staff experience cities of contrast

    Two staff members from CQU Mackay have recently returned to the campus following extended time overseas.

    Dr Rod Jewell from the Faculty of Informatics and Communication spent 12 weeks in Milan, Italy and talked to staff members recently about the contrasts between Mackay and Milan.

  • Library surveys students

    The CQU Library Client Opinion Survey was conducted online over a 2-week period in August, and results are now being compiled.

    The online survey, conducted by Rodski Survey Research, is designed to give staff and students an opportunity to comment on how well they think the library is performing in relation to what they think is important.

    More than 20 students attended the event in the relaxed setting of the courtyard in Building 32, as well as staff from Infocom, International and Student services.

    Former Bowen woman Sally Williams is juggling preparations for the start of her own multimedia business at the same time as planning a trip to her graduation ceremony.

    Now a Brisbane resident, Ms Williams will celebrate completion of a Bachelor of e-Journalism (majoring in Multimedia) at the CQU Rockhampton graduation ceremony on October 1.

  • Safety Services group presents to Chinese Govt leaders

    Central Queensland’s reputation as a centre of excellence in mine safety was recognised last Friday, Sept 16, when the Queensland Safety Services group provided a presentation to the leader of China’s State Administration of Work Safety in Brisbane.

    The Queensland Safety Services group comprises a range of member companies from Central Queensland including Central Highland Safety Services, Current Training, CQU, IML International, Lennon Training and TAFE’s TQ Mining.

    On Wednesday September 7, representatives from CQU met with the AUQA Audit Director, Mr Martin Carroll and the Deputy Chair of the Audit Panel, Mr Graeme Dennehy.

    Preliminary audit programs were discussed and negotiated.

    Australia needs a better approach to collection and delivery of regional indicators to monitor impacts, inform planning, facilitate development and manage risk.

    That is according to CQU Professor Bob Miles, who was addressing the Sustainable Economic Growth for Regional Australia (SEGRA) conference last week (September 5-7).
