Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

  • Lights back on at the Lumiere

    Melbourne's iconic art-house theatre, the Lumiere, will open again this Thursday night - not for an edgy world movie, but for an inaugural lecture hosted by Central Queensland University (CQU) Melbourne and compered by former television journalist Jo Pearson.

    Liquid-crystal displays have replaced the movie screens and there are now 181 cushioned chairs instead of the old hard theatre seats.

    AMP Foundation has pledged up to $20,000 towards the Relay for Life event to be hosted and sponsored by CQU Rockhampton on May 17-18.

    The Foundation's Community Fundraising Program has pledged to match 50% of funds the event raises, to a maximum of $20,000.

    Year 10 student Ellie Ball is tackling tertiary studies early to fast-track into vet studies and a career linked to her love for equestrian events.

    Ellie and her Biloela High schoolmate Bronwyn Ryan (in Year 12) have been mingling with adult students enrolled in a residential school for Foundation Animal Biology, at CQU Rockhampton.

    Central Queensland University invites submissions to the forthcoming reviews of the Centre for Social Science Research and the Centre for Environmental Management.

    The aims of both reviews are to:

    - make recommendations regarding the continuing designation;

    - to highlight strengths so that these may be further developed;

    - and to identify difficulties and impediments to progress and areas where improvements could be made.

    "Summers are a lot drier and far less humid and winters are just plain freezing," said Crystal.

  • Alumnus named Rural Woman of the Year

    Former Rockhampton Girls' Grammar School student and Central Queensland University graduate, Rosslyn Smerdon has been named Queensland Rural Woman of the Year and is in the running for the national title next month.

    The 34-year-old, mother of 3, heads up the multi-million-dollar Natures Fruit Company, based at the Glass House Mountains on Queensland's Sunshine Coast.

  • Chancellor to serve CQU for 5 more years

    Central Queensland University Chancellor Rennie Fritschy has agreed to serve the University and the community for 5 more years as chief advocate for (and representative of) CQU, as head of the University's governing body, the Council.

    The former Managing Director of Queensland Alumina Limited, Mr Fritschy was appointed CQU Chancellor in March 2004.
