Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

    CQU is involved in the United Nations-supported International Conference on Engaging Communities, due to be held in Brisbane from August 14-17.

    CQU is a supporting partner for the event and several of our staff members will take part.

  • Property owners game for conservation auction

    Property owners from central-western Queensland have taken part in a conservation auction game to trial options for establishment of vegetation corridors.

    Dummy properties were developed and allocated to participants, who used their regional knowledge to design corridors and identify payments required for conservation agreements.

  • A big Open Day at CQU Rockhampton

    Thousands of prospective CQU students of all ages will find out that dreams can come true at CQU Rockhampton Open Day on Sunday August 14.

    The University is offering – for the first time – more than 30 information and career seminars at Rockhampton (coinciding with the Central Queensland Multicultural Fair) for people who are seeking career advice and exploring study options, including on-campus and distance-education opportunities.

    CQU Mackay Bachelor of Learning Management student Suzanne Morgan (pictured right) receives the David Faulkner Memorial Prize from Robyn Faulkner at the campus prize-giving ceremony last Friday evening (July 8).

    The award is offered to a second-year student who shows technological skill and innovation.

  • CQU welcomes new students in Shanghai

    CQU has welcomed 38 new undergraduate students enrolled to study Bachelor of Business (Entrepreneurship) degrees in central Shanghai.

    The Shanghai operation is in association with LaSalle DHU, the largest China subsidiary of Raffles Education Corp.

  • CQU helps lead trans-Tasman research into physical activity

    CQU's Professor Kerry Mummery has gained funding to collaborate with an Auckland colleague in order to research the determinants of physical activity in the New Zealand and Australian populations.

    The CQU Rockhampton academic, who helped spread the 10 000 Steps Project throughout Australia, has gained the funding from the Royal Society of New Zealand through its International Science and Technology Linkages Fund.

  • CQU helps assess new way of capping rubbish dumps

    CQU will be collaborating with the University of Melbourne to undertake ‘phytocapping’ research to control landfill groundwater contamination, greenhouse emissions and odour.

    CQU researcher Dr Nanjappa Ashwath (pictured) is on the research team and his current work at Rockhampton's dump (see photo) will be expanded to other states with the view to testing the effectiveness of this environmentally-friendly technique of landfill remediation.

  • Short films sought for Rocky Fringe

    CQU staff and students are invited to enter the Rocky Fringe Short Film Competition and Short Film Festival.

    The Short (5 mins) Film Competition closes on July 22 and the general screening (15 mins or less) category closes on August 5, with the screenings of both on August 19.

    Dr Alexine Keuroghlian is recognised for expertise drawing together complex research on regional ecosystems.
