Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

  • CQU part of worldwide fight against respiratory infections

    CQU Rockhampton is now the headquarters of an Australian research team seeking better ways to prevent respiratory infections which kill millions of people worldwide every year.

    The Capricornia Centre for Mucosal Immunology has been established under the leadership of Professor Jennelle Kyd, whose research on immunity and vaccines is recognized internationally.

    Recent graduate Kim Beddoes has resumed her career in Fiji after a 2-year working holiday in Europe.

    Kim, daughter of Fiji's Leader of the Opposition Mick Beddoes, was among 43 graduates at CQU's ceremony in Suva on November 20.

  • Prep studies graduate welcomes major Aged Care Nursing scholarship

    Recently-graduated CQU STEPS (preparatory studies) student Nell O’Riely, recently received word she not only passed STEPS with flying colours but has also been accepted for a Royal College of Nursing Aged Care Nursing scholarship worth up to $30,000 to assist in the completion of her nursing degree at CQU.

    Nell almost dropped out of the STEPS course when her husband suffered a major heart attack at a time when she had assignments due, exams looming and 3 visiting family members from all corners of the globe arriving.

    CQU Rockhampton hosted a Women in Multicultural Societies forum on Friday, November 24, with videoconference links to CQU Bundaberg and CQU Mackay.

    The event was supported by the Women's Health Centre, the Nurturing Migrants Project (funded by Multicultural Affairs Queensland) and CQU.

    CQU staff members Rema Dhanasekar and Chrislyn Apellado are key organisers for an International Flavour Night conducted by the Central Queensland Multicultural Association.

    The evening, featuring cultural presentations, entertainment, raffles and international foods, will be held at Rockhampton's Bauhina House from 6.

  • Melbourne students don't mind taxing times

    CQU Melbourne International Campus students who volunteered their time to assist with taxation advice to campus students were awarded certificates of appreciation for their efforts with the Tax Help Program, during an official function at the Australian Tax Office last week.

    This is the second year the TECC (Training, Employment and Career Coaching) office has participated in the program and the demand from accounting students at the MIC campus to take part was very high.

    CQU Melbourne International Campus client services arranged an end-of-term excursion on the popular Puffing Billy steam train, trailing through the scenic and enchanting Dandenong Mountains, complemented by beautiful Melbourne spring weather.

    This was a relaxed and intimate assembly of MIC staff and students, none of whom had previously undertaken this odyssey.

  • UniGym undergoes expansion to meet community needs

    Central Queensland University’s UniGym is undergoing a massive expansion of its floor space and fitness facilities to accommodate for its growing community, staff and student use.

    The gym’s floor space will be expanded by about 45%, allowing for improved aerobic and equipment layout, including the 10 new fitness machines that are proving popular with members.

  • $25,000 teaching award for 3-way Engineering partnership

    Central Queensland University has expressed pride in this week's (November 28) announcement that its Bachelor of Engineering (Co-op)/Diploma of Professional Practice (Engineering) program has won a $25,000 Carrick Award for ' Programs that Enhance Learning’.

    The award from the Carrick Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education was given in the category of Educational Partnerships and Collaborations with Other Organisations and was presented by Education Minister Julie Bishop at Parliament House in an afternoon session.

  • CQU Melbourne celebrates Diwali Festival

    Diwali, the Festival of Lights, was celebrated at CQU Melbourne International Campus on Monday, October 23.

    A platter of Ladoo and Lab Jamun was offered to students at reception, as well as a brochure outlining the history of the festival and how it is celebrated in India.
