Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

    Community members, groups and agencies have been called on to ‘take ownership' of CQU's new Healthy Communities initiative to ensure it is relevant to their needs.

    That is according to Associate Professor Stewart Lockie who addressed today's (Nov 14) launch seminar for the research flagship in front of around 80 participants.

  • Noosa Hub nursing graduate now a midwifery prize winner

    CQU Noosa Hub nursing graduate Sandra Lee has gone on to win an Australian College of Midwifery Prize for her postgraduate studies with the Australian Catholic University.

    The Australian College of Midwives Prize is awarded to the graduating student who demonstrates commitment (in both the academic and clinical setting) to promoting safe and effective midwifery care, advocating to protect the rights of women, families and communities and using research to inform midwifery practice.

  • Awards recognise top research students and supervisors

    The Postgraduate Research Students' Committee hosted a function this week to recognise excellence amongst students and their supervisors.

    PRSC's Sohail Qureshi thanked Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Jennelle Kyd and staff from the Student Association, Office of Research and Library for helping postgraduate students throughout the year.

  • Uni a cog for cycling talent

    CQU is becoming an important cog in the success of cycling at both local and national levels, thanks to sponsorship, research and talent identification over the past 4 years.

    The most obvious winner at the CQU Rockhampton Cup On Wheels event last weekend (Nov 10) was Lindsay McMaster, who held aloft the trophy despite still recovering from a race fall during the recent Townsville Cup.

    CQU graduate Shane Hatton has embarked upon a career in events management and thanks his 'fantastic' lecturers for their support during his FLEX studies.

    Mr Hatton, who has a Bachelor of Business (Advanced Marketing Management), is now the Events Development Officer for Bundaberg City Council.

  • Bursaries back power engineering studies

    Central Queensland University students received bursaries to support their studies in power engineering recently as part of an industry-wide push to strengthen the State's energy industry skills base.

    The Power Engineering Alliance is an industry-wide partnership that includes Queensland Government-owned corporations Powerlink Queensland, ENERGEX, Ergon Energy, Tarong Energy and CS Energy.

  • Surprise proposal gives double cause to celebrate

    The annual STEPS (Skills for Tertiary Education Preparatory Studies) graduation at Central Queensland University (CQU) in Rockhampton ended with a surprise marriage proposal, giving further reason to celebrate.

    As the graduation ceremony ended, Wayne Sichter addressed the audience, went down on his knees holding a jewel box in his hand and proposed to the love of his life, Kelly Thomas, who is also a student.
