Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

  • Refugee support available through Sanctuary

    Sanctuary Central Queensland, a community-based refugee support group, will again have a presence at the CQU Multicultural Fair and Open Day to raise awareness of the group's work.

    Sanctuary was formed two and a half years ago to provide financial, material and pastoral assistance to refugees in need.

  • Aussie pub rock on agenda for Royal Geographic Society event in London

    Aussie pub rock is the focus of an academic paper to be presented at the esteemed Royal Geographic Society - Institute of British Geographers' conference in London in August (29-31).

    Central Queensland University researcher Dr Margaret Rogers is due to talk about 'Big Balls: Pub Rock, Geography and Australian Masculinity' during a session on 'Masculinity, intersectionality and place'.
  • Papers sought for event focused on technology for developing nations

    CQU academics Dr Amoakoh Gyasi-Agyei and Dr Yeboah Gyasi-Agyei are leaders in coordination of the International Conference on Adaptive Science and Technology for Developing Nations, due to be held in Ghana December 10-12, 2007.

    The paper submission deadline for this event is August 30.

  • Women in Research seek papers for conference

    Researchers are encouraged to submit papers for this year's Women in Research (WiR) Conference to be held at Rydges Capricorn Resort in Yeppoon in November (14-16), with the theme 'Making an Impact in Contemporary Society'.

    Papers must be submitted by Friday, August 17, via Garden stalls and balls behind early home nursing services

    Garden stalls, balls and other social events run by 'elite women' were critical to support home nursing services when they first emerged in Australia about 120 years ago.

    In some cases, State governments also helped with funds but, in 1956, there was a significant government intervention with the Commonwealth 1956 Home Nursing Subsidy Act.

  • Writers due to workshop in the forest

    A Writers' Workshop in the Forest will be held at the Waterpark Cabins at Byfield on September 7-9 this year.

    Participants can develop their writing skills with well-known Brisbane author Jena Woodhouse, CQU creative writing lecturer Dr Lynda Hawryluk and Capricorn poet Kristin Hannaford.

  • All welcome at presentation by Japanese teachers

    All interested people are welcome to attend a free presentation by 5 visiting primary school teachers from Japan, to be held at CQU Rockhampton on Monday August 13 from 11am-Noon.

    These teachers are experienced in-service teachers from Komatsu City, Japan, where CQU's Bachelor of Learning Management (Japanese) students conduct their Portal Task every year.
