Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

  • Sydney staff in karaoke challenge

    The challenge went out to undergraduate and postgraduate staff on the Sydney Campus to join together in a night of fun and frivolity for the 'Challenge Cup'.

    The undergraduate staff, though fewer in numbers to the postgraduate staff, focussed on some quality performances.

  • Community prizes awarded

    30 Central Queensland University education students from Rockhampton, Gladstone and throughout Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and even Sweden have been recognised with $5000 worth of awards and prizes provided by the community for their achievements in Education, Humanities and the Arts.

    Community prizes awarded included the Australian Literacy Educators Association Prize, the Catholic Education (Diocese of Rockhampton) Prize, the Iwasaki Resort Scholarship; the Leslie G Duthie Memorial Tourism and Leisure Studies Prize, The Morning Bulletin Prize, the Royal Geographical Society of Queensland Inc Prize, the WIN Television Queensland Prize in Broadcasting Journalism and many more.

  • Training available for rehabilitation coordinators

    A training course for Rehabilitation and Return to Work Coordinators is being promoted by the School of Health and Human Performance at CQU.

    The 3-day Commerce Queensland course will be available to University staff, students and interested members of the public, from August 21-23 at CQU Rockhampton.

  • Industrial Relations Commission declines NTEU request

    The Australian Industrial Relations Commission has declined the National Tertiary Education Union's  (NTEU) request to order Central Queensland University (CQU) to provide 3 months' further work to 34 fixed-term staff whose contracts expired on Saturday 30 June.

    In its decision, the Commission said that the "contracts [were] not of a continuing nature" and that there was no way of determining if the fixed-term contracts would have lapsed irrespective of any additional consultation sought by the NTEU.

  • CQU goes online with employee data

    The Division of Human Resources have proudly launched the first stage of the Employee Self Service Online (ESSO) system designed to provide staff with better access to information through more efficient use of University resources.

    The new system allows staff to login to a secure web application to access their personal, employment, pay and leave details online and is the first step in improved use of the Human Resources Information System.

    The twelve week course costs $200 plus the cost of a textbook.

    Student Services Counsellor, Pam Brown said it was great to see so many students take up the opportunity to attend the mid-year orientation information night.

  • Researchers identify challenges in mining industry

    A study into people management issues in the Bowen Basin's coalmines has now been completed by a team of CQU researchers, consisting of Professor John Rolfe, Associate Professor Lee Di Milia and Dr Connie Zheng.

    The study is significant as it identifies a series of human resource management challenges currently facing the region's most important industry - coal mining.

  • Cold snap doesn't deter students

    A drop in the temperature didn't stop the first annual Gladstone Undergraduate Education Student Society (GUESS) toga party from going ahead at CQU Gladstone.

    About 60 students and their friends attended the event that was organised by GUESS for all Gladstone students and staff.
