Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

    After a successful relaunch in 2003, Rockhampton's evening language classes are back on the calendar.

    This year, French, Spanish, Japanese and Mandarin classes are offered via the Language Centre at Central Queensland University.

    The history of Mackay’s two oldest surviving pioneering Maltese women will be depicted through photographic images at the International Women’s Day celebrations at the Mackay Botanic Gardens on March 6.

    Mackay Maltese Club president and co-author of From Humble Beginnings Carmel Baretta said the hardships endured by 12 Maltese women reflect the landscape of the time.

  • Journalism professor now a rep for Asian Media and Communications Centre

    CQU Journalism Professor Alan Knight has been appointed as the next Australian representative on the international Board of the Singapore-based Asian Media and Communications Centre (AMIC).

    AMIC, established in 1971, aims to spearhead the development of media and communication expertise in the Asia-Pacific to foster socio-economic progress throughout the region.

    CQU Bundaberg researcher Dr Karl Neuenfeldt’s work with music from the Torres Strait has earned him national recognition.

    Produced by Neuenfeldt, Tukuipau Ngulaigna But – a traditional song sung for maritime workers away from home from the central islands – has been placed at number seven in a Top 10 Songs list from the National Library of Australia’s archives.

Student Counsellor, Pam Brown said the Uni Skills program was designed to help first-year students develop the skills and knowledge they needed to do well in their studies.

    Faculty of Education and Creative Arts sub-dean, Dr Beverley Moriarty said the room was recently outfitted to create a dynamic and interactive teaching space.

  • New microscope based at PELM in Gladstone

    A new electron microscope purchased by Central Queensland University has been installed at the Process Engineering and Light Metals centre in Gladstone.

    Professor of Industrial Materials Science, Richard Clegg said the $300,000 low vacuum scanning electron microscope (SEM) was fundamental to the operation of PELM’s Industrial Materials laboratory.

  • Study and career options available at new Discover CQU centre

    About 50 University staff, CQU Foundation members and business people attended the launch.
