Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

  • Military activity may have caused 'earthquake' reports

    Military activity in the CQ region may have led to reports of earthquake-like effects, according to CQU seismology researcher Mike Turnbull.

    The Central Queensland Seismology Research Group (CQSRG) advises that on Wednesday 20 June between 12:00 noon and 12:30pm several reports of earthquake-like observations came from the Mt Larcom to Boyne Island district, adjacent to Gladstone.

    CQU Pro Vice-Chancellor and Executive Dean, Professor Elizabeth Taylor AO has been named in a Top 100 list of Australia's most influential engineers, published by Engineers Australia.

    This is the fourth consecutive year that Professor Taylor has been named in this influential group - this time in the category of Academia.

  • 'Banquet of Beethoven' for music and film lovers

    It's going to be an afternoon that's hard to ‘Beet'!  A Banquet of Beethoven will take place on Sunday July 29 at the CQCM Theatre from 3pm, to celebrate the work and life of Ludwig van Beethoven.

    The evening is a joint project of Film and Arts Mackay and Friends of the Conservatorium.

    One day they hope for new lecture rooms but for now, CQU Mackay Engineering students are happy to make the most of the new demountable classrooms that have just been added to the campus.

    Two have been erected on campus to cater to the students who are now in their second year of Engineering since this program expansion in semester one, this year.

    CQU e-journalism graduate Jacqueline Taylor is working her way up the media ladder as her workplace locations move south.

    Originally born and bred in Darwin, Jacqueline started off in the industry as a 15-year-old tape operator for the 'Live Racing Show' supplied by Sky TV and Darwin Turf Club.

  • Work experience students fan out on campus

    Work experience students from Rockhampton State High School have this week been working with Taka Yokoyama, Program Leader for the Bachelor of Learning Management - Japanese at CQU Rockhampton.

    Year 10s Martika Seiler (pictured left with Taka) and Marnie Laidlaw (pictured right) have helped with development of a DVD made in Japanese and English language versions.

  • Engineers impressed by CQU Bundaberg

    CQU Bundaberg science lecturer Desirae Kirby was thrilled to play host to 31 visiting engineers and chemists from the Burnett Local Group of Engineers Australia and the Southern Institute of Sugar Technologists last Thursday evening.

    Following a welcoming address by Head of Campus Professor Phillip Clift, the guests were treated to a presentation on the construction of the new $5 million academic and research buildings, incorporating a 64-seat teaching laboratory, 2 research laboratories, a sound studio, offices and administration area.
