Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

    CQU's Associate Professor Gayle Jennings was an invited guest at the 25th gala anniversary dinner of Hong Kong Polytechnic University's School of Hotel and Tourism Management.

    More than 700 people attended the dinner, which was held at the Convention Hall of the Hong Kong Conference and Convention Centre.

    Central Queensland University has benchmarked the quality of graduates from its four-year Bachelor of Psychology degree.

    Postgraduate Program coordinator Robert ForsterLee said CQU had submitted final-year thesis projects to academics from three highly-ranked Australian Psychology schools at the Australian National University, the University of Sydney and the University of Queensland.

    A Central Queensland University study has revealed that women make more informed decisions when deliberating on a jury.

    The study performed by Bachelor of Psychology student, Sandra Dawes, and doctoral student, Leeana Kent, under the supervision of Dr Lynne ForsterLee, Head of the School of Psychology and Sociology, examined the effects of juror gender, note-taking, eyewitness confidence, and need for cognition on verdict decisions and recall.

    Thirty science teachers from Rockhampton and district schools converged on CQU for an in-service training day on forensic science.

    CQU forensic sciences lecturer Associate Professor Graham Pegg said that the new push for teaching forensic science in schools was a good idea since it allowed science to be taught within an interesting and relevant context.

    While teenage school leavers tend to attract the most media attention, mature-age students (aged 25 and over) are in the majority among Central Queensland University's Australian students.

    In fact, CQU’s domestic students tend to be female, aged over 25, and studying externally or by mixed mode (8,056 are not internal versus 4,114 who are).
