Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

  • Equity Computer Award launched

    DELL Computers representative Stuart Kiernan and CQU Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic Services) Professor Alex Radloff this week combined to launch the Equity Computer Award.

    This equity initiative is aimed at assisting students on low personal income and who have difficulty in accessing computer labs on CQU campuses with the award of the DELL 6400 Inspiron laptop.

    Central Queensland University is moving forward on a strategy to employ more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through its involvement with CDEP (Community Development Employment Project).

    Responsible for developing the University’s Indigenous employment portfolio, Equity and Diversity Officer (Indigenous Services) Natasha Lamb said CQU will be developing strategies to increase the number of Indigenous people working at CQU through the newly established Indigenous Employment Reference Group.

    Former Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music lecturer and CQU Professional Doctorate graduate Dimitri Kopanakis is a regular performer at University graduations, but his latest gig was a little larger.

    Dimitri sang the Greek National Anthem for last night\'s capacity crowd at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, before the Australia v Greece soccer match.

  • Learning to teach made easier for students In Bundaberg

    Caitlin Bowmaker and Joshua Widdon were all smiles when they were presented with their scholarships from the (former) Faculty of Education & Creative Arts at Central Queensland University Bundaberg.

    Caitlin received the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Learning which is awarded to a student commencing a teaching degree who demonstrates an outstanding achievement at secondary school, particularly in English, Mathematics and Science.

  • High school students experience CQU Bundaberg

    A total of 110 high school students from a range of schools were treated to a day of fun and information at Central Queensland University Bundaberg last Wednesday.

    CQU Experience is run every year and gives high school students the chance to come out and experience CQU Bundaberg first hand, with a tour of the facilities, information sessions, displays and faculty presentations, as well as a free lunch with entertainment.

    The Queensland Cancer Fund Relay for Life event held at CQU Rockhampton's sports fields over the weekend (May 20-21) has been hailed a real success.

    As of Sunday, 99 teams had raised $200,000 and donations were still flowing in.

    Cultural Studies senior lecturer Dr Warwick Mules was recently invited to present a paper for the ‘EMSAH Research Seminar Series’ organised by the University of Queensland’s School of English, Media Studies and Art History.

    The invitation was a reflection of Warwick’s national and international contribution to research in the field of visual media.

  • Geography lecturer submits chapter for book on Southeast Asia

    Pearson Education South Asia will soon be publishing a book containing a chapter from Than Than Nwe, lecturer in Geography in CQU's School of Humanities.

    Ms Nwe was invited to submit a chapter for this publication after she presented at the 7th SEAGA International Conference.

  • Mining Associates visit CQU Rockhampton

    A group of 17 Anglo Coal Australia Mining Associates based at a variety of mines visited CQU Rockhampton earlier this month to meet lecturers and coordinators of their mining technology education program.

    Their program is coordinated by Anglo Coal Australia, Central Queensland University and Central Queensland Institute of TAFE/TAFE Queensland Mining Services.
