Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

    CQU's Professor Evelyn Hovenga recently returned from San Francisco where she attended the International Medical Informatics Association Board and General Assembly, the IMIA Nursing Informatics, and the IMIA Education working group meetings, the Medinfo2004 international conference and the ISO TC215 meetings as a member of the Australian delegation.

    "In between I also attended meetings and social functions with health informatics leaders, the American MedicalInformatics Association (AMIA), the IMIA Medinfo steering committee, the IMIA senior officers club and the AMIA nursing informatics group," she said.

    Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar Alicia Clendenin has gained a real taste of Australia since arriving at CQU Rockhampton in February.

    Alicia spent the first term working hard to gain a Graduate Certificate in Marketing Management but lately she's been having a bit of fun with a grab-bag of undergrad programs including Australian history, Australian sociology, PR and media and outdoor pursuits.

    CQU graduate John Millar is the Director of Physical Facilities and Information Technology for the Pacific Area for the Church Educational System of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

    The Sydney-based man is graduating in Rockhampton on Saturday with the Professional Doctorate (Transdisciplinary Studies).

    Associate Professor Gayle Jennings, School of Marketing and Tourism, was one of number of international authors invited to contribute to the forthcoming three-volume Encyclopedia Of Social Measurement to be published by Academic Press/Elsevier in November 2004.

    Associate Professor Jennings contributed two articles to the Encyclopedia: ‘Business, Examples of Social Science Methods Used in’ and ‘Business Research, Examples of Theoretical Paradigms that inform’.

  • Student survives assault and gets head around post-grad study

    Rockhampton’s Sharon Marks is looking forward to graduation day (Saturday, October 2) as the proof she is fully recovered from serious head injuries sustained while working as a volunteer overseas.

    A few years ago, she was working as a biodiversity officer through Australian Volunteers International in Tuvalu, a tiny coral atoll developing country about 1000km north of Fiji, when she was assaulted and medivaced back to Australia.

    Graduating CQU student Debara Foran is hoping for an extra award soon after she collects her graduate certificate in Human Resource Management at a ceremony in Rockhampton on Saturday, October 2.

    Ms Foran, a consultant currently working as a project manager for Ergon Energy in Rockhampton, is currently short-listed for the regional AIM (Australian Institute of Management) Professional Manager of the Year awards due to be announced later in October.
