Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

    Central Queensland University hosted a Primary Science Experience for Rockhampton district primary school students on Tuesday, August 19 and Wednesday, August 20 as part of National Science Week 2003 activities.

    About 150 students took part in interactive, hands-on science activities.

    Lifesize puppets were recently used to help Central Queensland University Mackay education students understand the support required for assisting children living with cancer.

    The McDonald’s Camp Quality Puppets facilitators used parts of an educational program to highlight ways of delivering fun and positive messages.

  • Campus motorists 'too fast'

    Twenty-eight per cent of motorists at CQU’s Rockhampton campus are exceeding the speed limit by up to 25 km/h, a CQU Facilities Management staff Speed Awareness Program has revealed.

    The startling figure of people exceeding the speed limit has brought a word of caution from Speed Awareness Program coordinator Damon Wells who said pedestrian safety was of paramount importance to the university.

    CQU’s Bundaberg staff headed out west recently to visit some of the region’s more distant feeder high schools – Monto, Gayndah, Mundubbera and Eidsvold State High Schools.

    The purpose of the visit was principally to inform year 10 to 12 students about CQU, its programs and opportunities for accessing the university from school.

    For many of the local community that had never visited the Bundaberg Campus of CQU, their participation in the Campus Open Evening, Discover CQU, was a real eye opener.

    “I hadn’t realised that there was so much here – there’s a lot more on offer than I expected,” said one potential student, adding “I just thought I’d pop out and see what was available, but now I can’t wait to get my QTAC form in!” Being in such a well hidden location with beautiful leafy surrounds has its advantages and disadvantages – one of which is the misconception in the local community that we’re still relatively small,” said Sue Sargent, Community Relations Officer.

    CQU's Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music is bringing Christopher Kiver (pictured) from the United States to Australia to guest conduct Rockhampton’s 4th annual Night of the Proms.

    Due to the special talents and audience appeal which Kiver exhibits, the Conservatorium has secured RCotA (Regional Centre of the Arts) funding to cover travel expenses for his visit.

    State MP Darryl Briskey, Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier and Minister for Trade with special responsibility for multicultural affairs said the Beattie Government has demonstrated its solid commitment to multiculturalism including the release of the Multicultural Queensland Policy.
