Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

  • STEPS students acknowledged at Mackay completion ceremony

    About 80 per cent of the students enrolled in pre-tertiary studies at Central Queensland University, Mackay, received certificates of recognition at a completion ceremony on Friday evening.

    Co-ordinator Lyn Forbes-Smith said the determination shown by most STEPS students provided an encouraging foundation for developing successful tertiary studies.

  • Rockhampton staff get better prepared

    Staff from Central Queensland University Rockhampton has been undertaking emergency response training over the last few months to make the campus better prepared for emergency situations.

    Health and Safety legislation requires that each building on-campus has a building fire warden and each floor has a warden.

    Central Queensland University is giving Year 11 students in the region a taste of IT (Information Technology) at a four-day residential program titled Do IT @ CQU.

    Do IT @ CQU coordinator Olive Mallory said the University wanted to inspire students about IT and give them a taste of university life.

  • Getting hot under the collar at work

    With the onset of hot weather and forecasts indicating no sign of rain, cool weather or any form of relief, Direct Edge Corporate Development manager has warned about the effects of heat at work.

    General Manager of Direct Edge, Ricki Jeffery said the media constantly reminded people about the importance of drinking plenty of water, avoiding long periods of exposure to the elements, and the importance of ventilation, with particular importance placed on the very young, the elderly and the act of leaving people and pets in locked or parked cars on hot days.

    Why do we get affected by heat stress? When we work, our metabolic rate increases and the temperature of our bodies’ organs and muscles rise (like a car engine where the waste heat starts to heat up the engine block and head). Our body begins to fatigue when deprived of important oxygen and nutrients, so it attempts to cool down the hot muscles and other body organs.

    About 250 Year 11 and 12 students have a better understanding of what university is all about after they attended Discovery Day at Central Queensland University Rockhampton on Wednesday.

    The students were given the opportunity to enquiry about programs and investigate the campus on a real “working day”.

    nGundanoo Imbabee Community Childcare Centre, Central Queensland University’s on-campus childcare centre in Rockhampton, will celebrate their 10th birthday and open day on Saturday 16 November, 2002.

    The open day will be staged from 3 to 5pm with the main feature being an art exhibition which will be opened by the Mayor of Rockhampton, Councillor Margaret Strelow at 3pm.

  • CQU reveals chronic health conditions in rural districts

    Asthma, arthritis, industrial deafness and stress are among the chronic health conditions that are affecting the Wowan, Dululu, Gogango and Goovigen communities, according to research conducted by Central Queensland University.

    The University’s School of Nursing and Health Studies’ Dr Sansnee Jirojwong said a number of chronic health conditions had been identified as part of a government funded health program, with stress perceived to be the primary health problem.

    CQU starred in the 2002 Premier of Queensland's Export Awards presentation in Brisbane Wednesday night. For the second year in a row CQU won the Education Award -- one of the most hotly contested categories.
