Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

    More than 300 people attended the official opening of the CQU sponsored 'St Joseph’s Home, Neerkol' art exhibition staged at the Ron Smyth Building in Rockhampton for artists Sunny Waldron and Julie Barratt last week.

    The opening night was a time for family reunions, reflections and excellent reviews.

    Graduates who completed their program of study in 2002 and filled in a Graduation Destination Survey were included in the draw.

  • Students graduate from ATSI Tertiary Entry Program

    CQU’s indigenous learning, spirituality and research centre, Nulloo Yumbah, hosted a graduation ceremony for four students who completed the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Tertiary Entry Program (TEP) last week.

    It was 12 months hard slog for the graduates, some of whom were working full-time while studying.

    Central Queensland University Toastmasters Club has been awarded club of the year after competing against three other Toastmasters teams from the Mackay area on November 8.

    Club president and former CQU Business & Law student Kerrie Mann accepted the aggregate trophy awarded after the club gained the most points from the four speaking competitions.

    CQU Master of Health Science student Julie Parry said as nursing enrolments continued to drop worldwide it was vital to discover the reasons why nurses left the profession or became dissatisfied in their jobs.

  • International recognition for adjunct staff member

    Recently-retired Ken Appleton, now an adjunct Associate Professor with the Faculty of Education & Creative Arts, will receive an award at the next Association for the Education of Teachers in Science (AETS) annual meeting in Nashville, from January 7-11 next year.

    It will be the first time the award has been presented to someone outside the USA and Canada.

  • Dr Kelso helps lead public sector ethics workshop

    CQU's Dr Robert Kelso has helped lead a workshop on ethics in the public sector, in the company of fellow Queensland Public Sector Ethics Network members Narelle George (Crime and Misconduct Commission representative) and Allan Demack (Queensland Integrity Commissioner).

    The workshop entitled "Reflections by the Integrity Commissioner and Ethics: Think globally, act locally" was presented to 20 attendees.

  • CQU receives huge response to girls' summer school

    The girls in Maths, Science and Technology Summer School, to be held at CQU Rockhampton in February, has received huge interest attracting about 80 applications from throughout Central Queensland. The summer school caters for 32 girls who are entering year 10 in 2004.
