Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

    Three third-year music theatre students have been preparing for their farewell cabaret performances at the Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music Theatre in Mackay.

    Music Theatre coordinator Judith Brown said Julie Price, Madeline Cain and Emily Fraser had put in a huge effort devising their own shows for assessment.

    CQU SUPPORTS LOCAL ROBOT TALENT Inspired by the success of the local champions of the Robocup Junior Australia National Finals 2002, Central Queensland University’s Faculty of Informatics and Communication are planning to work with regional enthusiasts and the organisers of RoboCup Junior in Australia to organise an annual, regional competition in Central Queensland.

    The Cathedral College Titans team of Cathy Kent, Wayne Sebbens, Josh Kearney and Lawrie Stanley were first time competitors in the Dance section of the event, placing third in the Queensland event, and then taking out the National Championship in Melbourne in September 2002.

  • Wilson building named

    The building that accommodates the Centre for Molecular Architecture (CMA) was named for former CQU Vice Chancellor (1991-1996) Professor Geoff Wilson during a ceremony last Friday on the Rockhampton Campus, prior to the graduation ceremony Professor Wilson, the current Vice-Chancellor of Victoria's Deakin University, told university executives, deans and staff who gathered outside the building that it was like coming “home” to CQU, where he enhanced the university's research programs and developed new centres for advanced learning.

    “When a stockwhip was given to me by the commonwealth government as I began my job at this institution in Central Queensland, I knew it was going to be an adventure,” Professor Wilson joked.

  • Young Voices visit Conservatorium

    Young Voices of Melbourne was founded in 1990 by its Director Mark O'Leary, and over the past 11 years has produced five CD recordings and toured seven states and territories of Australia as well as Europe, South Africa and North America.

    In Mackay, the choir will perform from 8pm on Wednesday, September 25, at the Conservatorium Theatre.

    An international team of education counsellors exchanged ideas with CQU staff and students about student recruitment, when they toured CQU Rockhampton facilities during a 6-hour fact-finding mission this week.

    A Norwegian student explained that by coming to CQU he didn't get lost in the crowd, as most fellow Norwegians tend to study at other universities in Brisbane.

  • Local government councils urged to foster intolerance of family violence

    In an effort to promote intolerance of domestic and family violence, local government councils are being urged to take a leadership role within their communities and develop strategies to combat violence within the home.

    Based at Central Queensland University’s Mackay campus, Queensland Centre for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence research officer Ruth Wood said Queensland local government councils had been requested to detail strategies they are implementing to reduce the tolerance of violence within their communities.

  • Kiwanis Club takes part in major Qenos projects

    The Kiwanis Club of CQU has recently completed a list of international projects, giving valuable experience to its members.

    In recent months, the club has successfully completed a computer hardware and software audit; prepared and donated computers for East Timor; developed a HTML version for the Kiwanis Australia District web site; and connected a small LAN.
