Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

  • Indigenous students urged to consider TEP

    Indigenous students are urged to consider enrolling in the Tertiary Entry Program based at CQU Rockhampton.

    TEP spokesperson Roslyn Dunphy said the free program was open for recent school leavers and mature-age people (even those who have not completed school) who have basic literacy.

    He will then host researchers from the Netherlands and Denmark in Rockhampton.

    Associate Professor Graham Pegg, Head of CQU’s School of Chemical & Biomedical Sciences, was invited to give a public lecture at the impressive new National Library building in Singapore, as part of the library’s current focus on showcasing life sciences.

    The talk was arranged by CQU’s education partner in Singapore, Hartford Education Group, and coincided with a scheduled visit by Dr Pegg to Singapore in late January 2006 for classes, moderation of assignment marks and meetings with Hartford personnel and students for the Biomedical Science program.

    CQU Health and Human Performance Associate Professor Peter Reaburn has been named The Morning Bulletin/CHR 2005 Senior Sports Star of the Year.

    The award acknowledges Dr Reaburn's 7th placement in the 50-54 years division of the Hawaiian Ironman - the pinnacle of ironman racing.

  • Jazz educator travels world to research guitar great

    Jazz studies lecturer Glen Hodges (pictured), from CQU's Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music, is travelling the world to research the improvisational style of the late jazz guitar great Jimmy Raney.

    Mr Hodges left this week (Feb 6) for 5 weeks visiting Copenhagen (Denmark), New York, Louisvile (Kentucky) and Temple, Dallas and Denton (Texas).

  • Warm Gold Coast welcome for Cool Schools winner

    Monica Christayani has been studying at the CQU Gold Coast International language centre this month, as a winner of a competition linked to CQU's segment on Indonesia's Cool Schools TV show last year.

    Cool Schools is an MTV-style show that visits universities around the world to profile studying abroad.

    CQU has united its Information Technology and Business Faculties to create a new mega-faculty, ‘Faculty of Business and Informatics’ (FBI).

    The move is in line with the University’s change agenda as part of the university-wide restructure and reorganisation, currently underway.

  • CQU Press wins four vice-regal book launches in Darwin

    The Administrator of the Northern Territory, the Honourable Ted Egan AO, will launch four new CQU Press titles in February in Government House, Darwin.

    He will launch Professor Don Fuller’s book entitled Indigenous Community Development in Northern Australia on February 23.

  • Gladstone smooths way for corrosion researcher

    Central Queensland University chemistry graduate, Ian McNeilly returned to study this week after 10 years working in the Research and Development department at Queensland Alumina Limited.

    Mr McNeilly accepted a University Postgraduate Research Award to undertake a research higher degree at CQU’s Process Engineering and Light Metals complex.
