Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

    Mackay Toastmasters Area 32 Governor Howard Frost inducted Central Queensland University’s new Toastmasters president Kerrie Mann at a recent luncheon. Ms Mann is completing her final year of Bachelor of Business through CQU and has belonged to Toastmasters for two years.

    Nulloo Yumbah Co-ordinator Nikki Timor said the visit allowed the students to discuss tertiary options available through the township’s closest major centre.

    Everyone is welcome to take a sneak peek at robots due to compete in the first annual CQ Junior Robotics Competition, featuring RoboCup Junior Australia.

    Intending competitors will trial their robots from 10am to 3pm on Sunday (July 27) at the CQ Community Sports Centre on Central Queensland University's Rockhampton Campus.

  • Internet addiction/overuse 'alarming'

    Even though the issue of Internet addiction or overuse has been a controversy among clinicians and researchers regarding the pathological definition, it is generally defined as using the Internet for eight hours and over per week for non-education or non-employment purposes.

    Research at the Community Informatics (COIN) Internet Academy (a joint-venture between the Faculty of Informatics & Communications of Central Queensland University and Rockhampton City Council) found that Internet addition or overuse does exist in communities of CQ, especially among those young adults (18-24), of which 33% tend to be Internet addictive, accounting for 13% of total population surveyed in CQ.

    Central Queensland University’s Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team proved that regional universities could secure a top spot against the capital city giants at the recent SIFE Australia National Competition.

    The CQU team made the national final in Melbourne last week (July 18 – 20) after a convincing win in its category.

    People from a range of cultures in the region are being encouraged to join the Parade of Nations at this year’s CQ Multicultural Fair and CQU Open Day.

    As this year’s theme is “Multiculturalism in the Workplace” coordinator for the Multicultural Fair Gina Yarrow said she would encourage people from all nationalities to get involved.
