Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

    Sub-Dean and lecturer at the Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music (CQCM) Judith Brown, has every reason to be proud of the CQCM and its methods used in teaching our future musicians.

    After recently attending an International Society of Music Education conference, Judith discovered that the more modern and innovative techniques and approaches to teaching professional musicians, are the same used everyday at our very own CQCM - but not necessarily all Conservatoriums around the world.

    If you could turn down the clamour of the Mackay, and listen to the rhythm of life in the Mackay region, what would you hear? The answer can be found on a CD on sounds recorded in Mackay with instrumental backing created by CQCM lecturer, Kim Kirkman.

    You can expect to hear sounds like the gentle lapping of coastal waves, early morning tunes from over 40 local birds, summer calls of crickets and cicadas and the beginning of a storm in the wet season.

    Mark Gasser was something of a saviour for the 16th Annual Australian Festival of Chamber Music according to festival organisers. Mark joined fellow world renowned pianists Sergei Babyan (USA), Pascal Roge (France) , Meng Chieh Liu (Tiawan) and Ami Hakuno (Japan) to work alongside the best soloists on there respective instruments with the apt slogan “Experience the world’s best – Live!”.

    As well as enjoying champagne and canapes in the foyer after the concert, local Mackay residence, staff and students of CQCM were treated to a musical feast in which Mark displayed his great passion and talent in performing.

    A very tearful farewell saw 24 Korean students from Ulsan college farewell their teachers and homestay families at CQU Mackay campus following an emotional and entertaining completion ceremony last Friday.

    For the last 4 weeks, the students have grown close to local families and their 4 teachers from the Bachelor of Learning Management program at CQU Mackay.

  • QLD regional students closer to win trip to Japan

    Year 10, 11 and 12 Japanese language students in Mackay will be one step closer to win a fully funded trip to Japan in August when CQU Mackay hosts the Meikai-Asahi-Central Queensland University Japanese speaking festival on Saturday, August 26.

    The aim of the competition organised by Central Queensland University (CQU), is to give students who are studying Japanese in regional areas, the same opportunities to compete and win such competitions as students in capital cities.

  • CQU tour leads to rescue service donation

    Two recent bus tours showcasing significant Darumbal Aboriginal sites have produced an unexpected windfall for the Capricorn Helicopter Rescue Service.

    Conducted by the Central Queensland University Community Program and facilitated by local Aboriginal activist Bob Muir, the tours took the 100 participants on a fascinating drive through Darumbal lands, customs and stories from Mt Archer to the coast and back again.
