Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

    Seven earthquakes hit the Bundaberg region over the weekend in two different locations and, thanks to a CQU Bundaberg academic, their trail was traced.

    The Bundaberg area is regarded as the most earthquake prone region in Queensland.

    Forty-eight new Skills for Tertiary Education Preparatory Studies (STEPS) students completed an Orientation Day at CQU Mackay recently.

    Campus Coordinator of STEPS and Communication Learning Centre Lyn Forbes-Smith said the 13-week full-time program prepared students for 2004 tertiary admittance.

    “The new staff bus service between CQU Rockhampton and the city campus is not only saving money - it is also saving the environment,” according to Dee Reeve from Greening CQU.

    About 30 year nine students from Pioneer State High School in Mackay toured Central Queensland University Rockhampton campus last week during a visit to the region.

    CQU recruitment officer Tony Gubbins headed the tour dropping in at the School of Health and Human Performance, Faculty of Engineering and Physical Systems and School of Environmental Sciences.

    Rockhampton-area residents have been encouraged to take advantage of a new range of Wednesday evening classes in Spanish, French, Mandarin and Japanese.

    Korean, Indonesian, Italian and German may also be offered if there are sufficient numbers.

  • Rockhampton shows signs of better health

    A joint initiative between the CQU-based 10,000 Steps project and Rockhampton City Council has seen the development of a series of signed and stencilled walking routes, the first of their kind in Queensland.

    Titled Every Step Counts, the purpose of the signage is to encourage and support Rockhampton residents of all ages to take physical activity for leisure and health.

    CQU’s Dr Geoff Dickson leadership in developing a Lest We Forget Run event for Rockhampton has earned him a Sport Achievement Award signed by Prime Minister John Howard.

    Dr Dickson incorporated the event’s coordination into projects for his sport planning and development class, and hopes it will become a staple for human movements students.

  • Gladstone graduation coincided with 25th anniversary

    CQU Gladstone’s recent graduation ceremony also helped to mark 25 years since the campus began in the Harbour City.

    City residents were encouraged to witness a bagpipe-led procession along Goondoon Street by the 41 graduating students and CQU staff members.

    University rivalry will take to the sporting fields early next month as Central Queensland University teams travel to Brisbane to contest the 2003 DrinkSmart Northern University Games from July 6-10.

    Hosted by The University of Queensland and Griffith University, the Games are set to attract 2500 student competitors from 14 campuses throughout Queensland, Northern Territory and northern New South Wales and are being held in Brisbane for the first time since 1998.
