Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

  • Fundraiser helps Japanese tsunami victims

    CQUniversity staff and students turned out for a special barbecue last week to support the victims of Japan's recent earthquake and tsunami.

    The event raised almost $750 which will be donated to the Salvation Army's Japan Relief Appeal.

    Young and/or healthy people are less likely to use the Heart Foundation's Tick of approval to make food choices in the supermarket, according to a study conducted by CQUniversity.

    Healthy food researcher from CQUniversity's Institute for Health and Social Science Research Dr Susan Williams said the survey of 1435 adult Australians, conducted late 2009, revealed that the Tick program was rarely used by younger people and those who had not been previously diagnosed with a chronic health condition.

    Initial results from a pilot study show that tailored video messages delivered online are encouraging people to increase their physical activity levels.

    CQUniversity researcher Dr Corneel Vandelanotte says that personally relevant video messages are selected from a database based on each viewer's response to lead-up questions.

    Yulia Danilova grew up in the Russian port city of Vladivostok and arrived in Australia with her family as a teenager - 'the worst time to be moving schools'.

    Despite having to brush up on English at a language centre, Yulia did have one ace up her sleeve as her Russian-taught maths skills proved to be more advanced than the Australian school standard.

    Four Professional Doctorate graduates were among a total of 135 students from 25 countries of birth who celebrated at CQUniversity's Sydney graduation ceremony, at Sydney Town Hall on Wednesday May 11.

    They are Felix Lo (A policy proposal for affordable homeownership in New South Wales); Paul Reyneke (A complex adaptive systems approach to reducing work-related injuries in New Zealand supermarkets); Deen Sanders (Professional enlightenment of financial planning in Australia) and S M Riad Shams (A relationship marketing model to enable sustainable growth of the Bangladesh Cricket Board: A stakeholder causal scope analysis).

    Melbourne-based Associate Professor Ken Bruce was invited to participate in the United States Financial Planning Association's European Geographic Focus Group meeting in Nice recently.

    Participants included financial planning practitioners and educators from Germany, France, UK, Bulgaria, Italy, Hungary, Canada, Ireland and the US.
