Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

  • High achievers gain campus director's awards

    Four high-achieving graduates from the CQU Sydney International Campus received Campus Director’s awards at the Graduation Ceremony at the Sydney Town Hall this week.

    The students, Iveta Kocurkova from Slovakia, Ryan Ebardo from the Philippines, Olga Kornijenko from Estonia and Chong He from China, said they enjoyed making friends with students from other cultural backgrounds.

    Rockhampton is an acknowledged leader in using trees to 'cap' its landfill (rubbish dump), and CQU has been helping develop and gauge the success of this project.

    It is Rockhampton's 5 years of experience which this week attracted Australian and American researchers to the city for a presentation of the results from the Lakes Creek Landfill 'Phytocapping' project.

  • Bishop launches CQU Press title in Toowoomba

    Bishop Rob Nolan last Friday launched Mary Robert’s book, 'Victoria Downs', which is a celebration of 100 years of family ownership of this outstanding merino sheep stud near Morven.

    Mary Roberts is an ordained minister in the Church of England and coincidentally is a member of Bishop Rob Nolan’s flock, because his region extends from Ipswich to Birdsville.

  • International student revisits Rocky campus

    Former CQU international student from Bangladesh, Anis Ahsan (currently Australian citizen), revisited his old university campus in Rockhampton recently with his friend, Mari Iinuma, and her parents Fujio and Kinue Iinuma.

    During their stay in Rockhampton, they toured the local area including Yeppoon and Gladstone, also stopping in on Lavenia James at CQU International.

    Anyone lucky enough to be at Tumbalong Park, Darling Harbour on Saturday April 29 would have enjoyed the hospitality of the Nepalese festival.

    CQU Sydney International has had a long involvement with the Nepalese community and many CQU students, graduates and current, were spotted at the 2006 Nepal Festival, confirming this relationship.

    Mr Fitzalan has over 18 years of professional experience as a Partner in the Corporate Tax Group at Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu.

  • Education projects company director addresses Brisbane and Gold Coast graduates

    Education projects company director Ross Bishop (pictured) was guest speaker for this week's graduation cermony for students from CQU's Brisbane and Gold Coast international campuses.

    Mr Bishop was initially a steel sales manager with BHP, before entering teaching and then moving on to be a career manager in the higher education sector.

  • CQU Melbourne major sponsor of Thai Festival

    CQU Melbourne International Campus recently joined Thai Air as the main sponsors for the Thai Food and Cultural Festival which coincided with the Thai New Year celebrations.

    More than 50,000 people visited the vibrant displays and performances held in Federation Square in Melbourne in early April.

  • Arts grant draws Chinese temple closer to former glory

    The Rockhampton Chinese Association will celebrate the completion of Stage One of the redecoration of Joss House, a Chinese temple and hall in North Rockhampton, this month.

    Thanks to a Central Queensland University grant (via the Regional Centre of the Arts), the Rockhampton Chinese Association is undertaking a ‘renovation rescue’ on the 106–year-old Chinese Joss House, its artifacts and the hall in which they are kept.

  • Nursing involved in national expo

    CQU's School of Nursing and Health Studies will send representatives from its Rockhampton and Sunshine Coast sites to the Royal College of Nursing Australia (RCNA) Expo in Brisbane on May 28.

    The RCNA Expo is a major event in the nursing calendar.
