Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Adult learning peak body visits, calls for 'reassessment'

The president of Australia's peak adult learning body, Professor Barry Golding has visited Rockhampton for a forum calling for a reassessment of adult education in Australia.

CQUniversity hosted the forum at its Ron Smyth Building in Quay Street.

  • Science made cool in Mackay

    Science Week was kicked off at Central Queensland University (CQU) Mackay campus early this week with students from the area joining in on some fascinating workshops run by the North Queensland Science Education Centre’s (NQSEC) ‘Lab on Legs’.

    The NQSEC is running hands-on science experiments based around real-life CSIRO research and students are getting the chance this week to be scientists and see what it’s like to work in this area.

    CQU is helping to stage an Australian Institute of Management monthly event about the management of a Regional Contact Centre, in its role as a regional partner of AIM and host of the AIM secretariat (via the Faculty of Business and Informatics).

    Local managers will have the opportunity to visit one of Rockhampton’s leading local businesses -Ergon Energy on Thursday, August 31(5:30pm to 7pm).

    Sessions will be held at Mackay on August 28, Gladstone on August 29, Bundaberg on August 30, Noosa Hub on August 31 and Rockhampton on September 5.

    CQU Fiji International Campus (CQU FIC) is a major contributor to the education sector in Fiji compared to other tertiary institutions in the country, according to discussions at a recent Symposium of Academics in Fiji.

    The conference, focusing on the theme of `Living Together in a Globalizing Fiji’, took place earlier this month and involved a number of academic representatives from CQU FIC and other Fiji-based universities and institutions.

    Students and staff based at CQU Rockhampton can help their home district compete against Townsville in the 10,000 STEPS City of Origin challenge.

    Teams of up to 5 people can register until September 11 for the challenge, which runs for 6 weeks from September 17 to October 28.

  • Nurturing Migrants Project sets example for regional communities

    Over the past 7 months, 'Nurturing Migrants' project officers have been working to assist more than 40 migrants and their families to gain access to available social, education and health services in Rockhampton and district communities.

    This partnership project with the Rockhampton City Council, Fitzroy Shire Council, Central Queensland Multicultural Association and key community leaders has identified needs among migrants.
